Artichoke flower, cosmos, and a feather

One of the most exciting things that I anticipated for starting our small family farm was to have our own logo. How cool is to have our own logo to use everywhere!!! I wanted to make all kinds of things with our logo on them, and I still do. Someday I will make flower buckets with our logo (thanks Jan for your fabulous idea!) so that our customers can transport flowers in style while making sure flowers stay hydrated and fresh!

Dan and I are truly blessed with many wonderful, talented friends and neighbors. We first met Kristin at one of Dan’s favorite bars in Downtown Frederick. We used to stop by there for a happy hour after work every so often and enjoyed chatting with friends and neighbors. We quickly learned that she was talented in so many ways - she brews wonderful beers with her husband Mark, cooks delicious meals, entertains house guests seeming effortlessly, and makes beautiful pottery.

I am so glad I asked her to design the farm logo for us, and grateful that she said “Yes”. It was great working with Kristin. First, I reviewed my photos and picked some favorites to make an album. I also set up a pinterest board and collected logo styles that I liked. Then, Kristin reviewed those and came up with three different sketches. Once I picked the favorite sketch, Kristin further refined it and made the master logo! When the master logo was approved, she made me a million different variations so that I can pick the right one for a particular use (web vs print, title vs no title etc.)

Here is our farm logo. The flower at the center is an artichoke flower, and the flowers on the left are cosmos flowers. In the earlier version, they had 6 petals and I requested to make them 8 since cosmos has 8 petals… I also like the foliage in between flowers and how it has a fractal leaflet.

We raised backyard chickens in downtown Frederick. They free-ranged most of time and entertained young guests when we had a party. Children had a busy time feeding the chickens with various weeds they found in the garden and trying to catch and hold them in their arms.

When I included our chicken coop photo in the album, I had no idea a feather would become a part of the logo. I just added the photo since I liked all the warm and fuzzy feelings that I got from the photo.

I feel Kristin’s logo captured the essential parts of what makes our farm uniquely us.

Below is the album that I set up for our logo creation process. All flowers are from our previous garden, except those from winter when I had to buy focal flowers from a grocery store. I used to buy flowers in winter from a shop to hold me over (yes, flower addition is real).

See if you can find motives for our logo from the photos below. Happy browsing. :)
